Sagrada Familia
Calle Mallorca 401, Barcelona.
Started in 1882, presently unfinished.

Though construction of Sagrada Familia
had commenced in 1882, Gaudi became
involved in 1883, taking over the project and
transforming the project with his architectural
and engineering style—combining Gothic
curvilinear, Art Nouveau forms with ambitious
structural columns and arches.

In 1910 Gaudi refused all other commissions
to work on Sagrada Familia. Gaudi devoted
his last years to the project and at the time of
his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Since then different
architects have continued the work after his original idea.

Construction passed the mid-point in 2010
with some of the project's greatest challenges
remaining and an anticipated completion date
of 2026—the centennial of Gaudi’s death.

Sagrada Familia is an expiatory church, which
means that from the outset (125 years ago)
till now it has been built from donations. The
Sagrada Familia is one of the most popular
attractions in Barcelona, visited by an roughly
2.26 million people per year. Sagrada Familia
church has become a symbol of Barcelona.
